Moviehouse Studio Gallery Show Will Benefit Local Funds

Photographer Malcolm Kirk and multimedia artist Steven Sorman will exhibit work at The Moviehouse Studio Gallery from December 14-January 29, with 50% of sales from the exhibit benefiting the Northeast Dutchess Fund and Fund for Columbia County.

The public was invited to an opening reception with the artists on December 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The Moviehouse is located at 48 Main Street in Millerton, NY. More information is available on its website, www.themoviehouse.net or by calling 860-435-2897.

“We are pleased to be able to give back to the community while encouraging people to come view the work of two wonderful artists with ties to our region,” said Carol Sadlon, director of The Moviehouse and the Moviehouse Studio Gallery. “The Northeast Dutchess Fund and the Fund for Columbia County support nonprofit organizations in our area, and we are happy to contribute to their good work, especially in this difficult financial time.”

Ancram artist Steven Sorman is known for his visually complex painting and printmaking.  He experiments with different types of media, blending colors, abstract forms and aesthetic genres. Sorman’s work includes layering materials and images to create fluid shapes and sinuous lines along with seductively beautiful color that flows in measured movement over expansive surfaces. The overlapping forms, layering glazes, and transparent veils of color in Sorman’s prints depict atmospheric depth and serenity. His prints also convey delight in ornamental effects that link him to Matisse, Motherwell, and Rauschenberg.

Malcolm Kirk is known internationally for his photographs of European gardens, New Guinea tattoo art and portraits of prominent artists and scientists. His iconic image of Warhol, subsequently translated by the artist into a series of silk-screened ‘self-portraits’, hangs in major museums throughout the world. His most recent collection of work, “Silent Spaces: The Last of the Great Aisled Barns,” is the culmination of years of photographing European barns, which feature central naves and flanking aisles. Kirk and his wife had a classic example of these massive timber-frame structures dismantled, transported, and re-erected as a residence on their hillside property in Columbia County.

The Fund for Columbia County and the Northeast Dutchess Fund are area funds of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. In 2007, the Fund for Columbia County distributed more than $54,500 to 34 nonprofit groups and the Northeast Dutchess Fund awarded $42,370 to 21 nonprofits. The grants were given to programs ranging from early childhood music programs to environmental restoration programs and support for local arts groups and libraries.

Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation builds stronger communities and improves the quality of life for all residents of Berkshire County, MA; Columbia County and northeast Dutchess County, NY; and northwest Litchfield County, CT. Thanks to its generous donors, each year Berkshire Taconic distributes more than $7 million through scholarships and grants for programs in the arts and education, health and human services, and environmental protection. Berkshire Taconic is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization.
