We announced the Red Devon was serving Brunch last week on our website and we already heard back from one of our readers and here’s what she said:
“We had brunch on Sunday, and it was fabulous! cozy, sophisticated and delicious. The most delicate hollandaise…and the best coffee! GO! Support your local businesses! while enjoying a very fine meal…”
I couldn’t agree more!
We had brunch at Red Devon on their inaugural Sunday and both Bonnie and I absolutely loved it. The service…the ambiance…and of course, the food…was just right for a “sophisticated” yet relaxed Sunday meal.

The dining room itself is lovely in the day time. (Until this day, I had only dined in the Restaurant in the evening.) Lots of light, understated tasteful decor, unobtrusive music, a crackling fire in the fireplace (and a tasty Bloody Mary) and we knew we were in for a treat.
The menu has all the traditional (yet with a special Red Devon twist) offerings you’d expect for a Sunday Brunch (like Eggs Benedict, Steak & Eggs, Buttermilk Pancakes & French Toast) but Chef Jim Jennings really ups the ante by taking a more adventurous route with selections like Chilaquiles, Slow-Braised Grass-Fed Lamb Shank and Southern Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes & Collard Greens. Truly…everything on the menu sounded so mouth-watering … the hardest part of my whole weekend was deciding what to order from Red Devon’s brunch menu.
Breads came right after our drinks. A basket of all kinds of breads…from savory to sweet and all delicious. Not surprising since the Red Devon Market is probably one of the best sources for delicious home-baked pastries and breads in the whole area. And make sure you order coffee. It’s Red Devon’s own blend from Dean’s Beans (a fair trade organic coffee importer and roaster in Massachusetts)…rich, dark and smooth…not a bit bitter!
Knowing that Chef Jennings is from Texas (and since I’m a huge fan of his Red Devon chili) I decided to go the southwestern route…I ordered the Pork Carnitas Huevos Rancheros. Bonnie, too, wanted to try something more unusual and selected the French Style Omelet with Roast Pork Belly.
The Pork Carnitas Huevos Rancheros came with refried beans, spinach and homemade tortillas, queso fresco, creme fraiche & chipotle salsa. It was fantastic. As soon as I tasted the refried beans I knew this was seriously good Mexican food. Refried beans aren’t supposed to be a mashed up mess of brown paste that taste like the can they came out of. These beans were flavorful, not mushy, perfectly spiced and a wonderful complement to the fried eggs that sat perched atop crispy tortilla strips with spinach and a light cheese (queso) sauce. The salsa and creme fraiche added just the right touch. I ate EVERY bit of it!
Bonnie loved her selection too. The omelet was just gorgeously French — simple, straightforward and really tasted like eggs…you know what I mean! The Pork Belly was surprisingly tender…and tasted almost like pork tenderloin. Not overwhelming and went well with the eggs even though it sounded like an unusual pairing.
After a couple more refills of coffee we finally had to accept the fact that brunch was over and we must go home. We’re already planning on bringing some friends back to Red Devon with us. After writing this review (and looking at that Brunch Menu again) it won’t be soon enough!

So, make a day of it. Enjoy Sunday Brunch and Red Devon in Bangall and then make your way up Rt. 82 to Pine Plains and come on over to Hammertown Barn for a little shopping. We’d love to see you!
