In our Rhinebeck Gallery through June 30th: Artist Patrick Madden

“Sensing and including all of the emotions, not just the obvious ones, is for me a way to make a painting authentic to a moment, authentic to the feelings that were present. And in doing that, my paintings, I believe, endure. They become lasting. They carry that moment and those feelings through time. And if I can do that, I have done my job.”   Patrick Madden

Patrick’s work has been seen in galleries from San Francisco to New York City.  He splits his time between San Francisco, New York City and Staatsburg and many of his paintings and drawings express this self-described “nomadic”  lifestyle he has created for himself.

With this particular series of work, Concurrent Emotions, Patrick has taken moments of his emotional life and tried to “express them directly–to paint them abstractly, to eliminate the metaphors, the middle men.  I have remembered moments in my own life as emotional motivation, to help me create paintings that are personal, but I have tried to also pick moments that we have all felt–leaving and arriving, loving and hating, being a child of someone and a parent of another”.
