Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim book by Burt Shevelove & Larry Gelbart
June 18 – July 4th
“Tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!” Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written – the perfect escape from life’s troubles. “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from 2000 year old comedies with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom.
John Simpkins, the director of Forum, works in New York City and across the country. His most recent work includes the Off-Broadway production of The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks (Theatreworks, USA- Lucille Lortel Theatre). John is also a member of the music theatre faculty at New York University – where his production of Parade was honored by being selected for Lincoln Center’s Theatre on Film and Tape Archive. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and TriArts is thrilled to have him up to Sharon, CT.
TriArts Artistic Director, Michael Berkeley, is music directing the live orchestra for Forum, and said “I am really looking forward to bringing this show to TriArts; it’s fast-paced and hilarious. We have a dream cast assembled for this production, including Equity actors, professional performers, and the best of the local talent.” Added Executive Director Alice Bemand, “Broadway’s greatest farce is witty and irreverent, the perfect kickoff to our Summer of Fun season lineup. Forum will be followed by Disney’s High School Musical 2, Music Man and Divas Do It All.”
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is sponsored by Best & Cavallaro Real Estate, The White Hart Inn and WKZE radio. For tickets, call the box office at 860-364-SHOW (7469) X 200 or visit TriArts website.
