This quote of Sister Parish’s reflects why I am such a great fan of hers. There are good designers, but what makes design really great is the ability to reflect the soul of the people in the design of their home…both inside and out. This book, written by Susan Bartlett Crater (Sister’s granddaughter) and Libby Cameron, (Sister’s last protégé) draw on their experience to reflect how you can translate the Parish-Hadley influence into inspired surroundings.
Comfort is the essential element of a successful interior and the hallmark of the Parish-Hadley style. In Sister Parish Design, the authors explore this aspect and much more in a series of conversations with the leading decorators of today.
Sister Parish, the iconic American decorator of her generation, used flowered chintzes and overstuffed armchairs combined with unexpected items, like patchwork quilts and painted furniture, to create what became known as American Country–style during the 1960s. Her passion for bold color and mixed patterns invoked charm, imagination, and a lived-in look to her rooms. Her philosophy was to be unafraid and to put things together because you liked them–not because they matched.
Filled with beautiful watercolor illustrations by local Millbrook resident, Mita Corsina Bland, Sister Parish Design is more than just a stunning book—it is an inspirational resource that all decorating aficionados’ will want to add to their bookshelf.
I am thrilled, absolutely thrilled, to have our renovated gatehouse open for this booksigning, and to give everyone the chance to meet the illustrator and writers of this absolutely wonderful book. The reviews have been fabulous (NY Times), and for anyone interested in design, this book is a must.
We’ll be serving wine and local cheese from Amazing Real Live Food Co. and hors d’oeuvres from the Stissing House and talk you’ll be able to talk to the authors!
