IT’S ENOUGH TO DRIVE ANYONE CRAZY!!
No matter how hard you try…in fact, it seems the more you try the worse your hair looks. Styling your hair is no picnic in the Winter…for anyone…but there are some products and salon treatments that can help.
I was getting my “hairapy” at Hylton-Hundt Salon last week and everyone was talking about their “winter hair blues”. Static…dryness…dullness…were common complaints. So, of course, I asked my hair guru, Bonnie, for some tips on what to do. Here’s her advice:
No one escapes winter hair and low humidity is the culprit during these cold months. Dry, cold air sucks moisture from everything…your home, your skin, your scalp and your hair. It’s what causes the static, frizzing & broken ends as well as dry itchy scalp.
There are basically two simple rules to help fight the “winter hair blues”.
Winter Hair Rule One: Hair needs moisture to stay & look healthy.
Even if you have fine, limp hair and you think all conditioners will weigh down your hair…think again…everyone needs some kind of conditioning for winter. You’ll never get the volume you’re looking for without some kind of moisture to plump up your hair.
Moisturizing Conditioners also help to reduce static which is a real problem during winter months with all types of hair.
How We Can Help
At Hylton Hundt we’re carrying some new Unite Products that offer some real help for stressed and damaged hair. There are two in-salon treatments in particular we’re recommending to our clients. Both of these Unite treatments take just 10-20 minutes. (Only $5 as an add on to another service or $10 as a stand-alone treatment. A great and inexpensive gift for your hair.)
Unite’s Stronga (Designer Protein) – especially good for fine or damaged hair because it adds protein (i.e, strength) to make it more substantial and healthier.
- Deep protein treatment
- Strengthens hair while replenishing moisture
- Enhanced with Creatine protein to strengthen and seal in moisture
- Your hair will never feel more strong and brave!
Unite’s Softa (Designer Moisturizer) – good for adding moisture directly into the hair. Smooths the hair cuticle without weighing hair down.
- Moisture Moisture and More Moisture
- Replenishes dry and damaged hair
- Does not weigh hair down
- All Hair Types
- It’s your hair’s ultimate treat!
Winter Hair Rule Two: Hair Needs Protection
Cold is as damaging to hair as a hot blow dryer. And, if you’re outside a lot…activities like skiing can really do your hair in.
Glazing – Simply put, I think of glazing as “polyurethane for the hair”. It adds sheen and a protective coating against cold dry weather. And, you get the added benefit of pumping up and protecting your fresh hair color. (Joan really likes this treatment!)
At Home Tips:
1. Use a humidifier: Dry heat at home or in the workplace adversely affects your hair (and skin & sinuses) during the winter months.
2. Use a salon-quality at-home conditioner (we can recommend ones that are right for your hair)
3. Dry hair thoroughly before braving harsh winter weather conditions. Wet hair can actually freeze and will cause damage and stress to your hair. Make sure you dry your hair thoroughly before entering freezing temperatures.
4. Shampoo less if you experience excessive breakage. It’s common for hair to break off more during dry winter months. One way to keep some of the natural oils in your hair during the winter is to wash the hair less. Also rinse you hair with cool water to help with static.

Well put and so true!
Another tip for winter hair sufferers: If you pet your cat when you have a bad case of winter hair, you run the risk of setting each other on fire.
Same goes for pulling a polar fleece top over your head. If you do it in the dark, you can practically read by the firelight it sparks.
