In the years since Brandt Bolding began residence in Dutchess County, he had an increasing awareness and appreciation for the agricultural world of upper New York State – and the extraordinary personalities working these farmlands.  He began photographing as much as he could of it as time would allow.

“This interest and awareness was accelerated several years ago when I started shooting a documentary film on an 18th c. farm (which will become a C.S.A. in future) up the Hudson River in Albany County…and its multi-generational owners.   As a part of this documentary film (and others typically), I had taken hundreds of digital still images…so that there becomes a dual record if you will.  As I reviewed these photographs over subsequent months I recognized that here was a very compelling visual story about a world in which most of us rarely inhabit.”

Last fall he approached Red Devon owner, Julia Widdowson (who is a local environmental and conservation leader as well as a farmer) with the idea of a photographic exhibition at her own Red Devon Market Bar & Restaurant, in Bangall, NY.  One of Julia’s chief ambitions is  to promote and help preserve our regional farms, farmers, and the farmland communities.

“I am attempting to memorialize the land and the achievements of great men and women who work to provide for our tables. As we talked about this further, we realized it was a perfect match.”
