JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH!
Along with baseball, isn’t eating ice cream almost the favorite American summer pastime? Who doesn’t remember the nostalgia of the ice cream place you would go to with your family…you had to have your ice cream fix! For me, as a kid, it was a family run ice cream parlor in Englewood, New Jersey; then later, as a parent, it was Van Dyke’s in Ridgewood, New Jersey — we’d go after the kid’s soccer and ball games. And, always during our summers at Block Island we went to the scoop shop every night. Simply put, Ice Cream has just always been an important part of life. So, with that in mind, I sent staff member Crystal Vossler, off to do her first assignment for our blog…the new scoop shop in Pine Plains.
My nephew, Peter Osofsky’s wife, Nina, has just opened The Scoop Creamery in downtown Pine Plains next to the Mountain Cow.
“At The Scoop Creamery we combine rich, fresh dairy products from the happy, hormone-free Holstein cows at Ronnybrook Farm with sweet and savory local baked goods from Telu Confections. We are committed to working with local farmers to incorporate fresh, seasonal ingredients into all that we do. Our flavors range from classic to inspired. Hudson Valley Vanilla meets Rosemary Lemon sorbet.!”
So here’s the scoop on The Scoop from Crystal:
I went to Nina Osofsky’s new ice cream parlor in Pine Plains this weekend and really loved it. Finally, Pine Plains has its very own ice cream parlor again! July is national ice cream month so why not celebrate by visiting The Scoop Creamery?

Nina Osofsky has had a passion for Ronnybrook ice cream ever since she met her husband Peter in 2002. After 12 years in the international tea industry, ice cream is a completely new territory for her. She’s given in to her obsession for ice cream. Since the birth of their daughter in May 2009, Nina has been dreaming of a place where friends and family can get together over their favorite Ronnybrook desserts (other than their backyard). A great neighborhood hang-out, for families, kids, hipsters and Ronnybrook addicts alike – right in her hometown.
It is a very welcoming and friendly environment. Nina is there to greet you with a smile and some conversation. Bright and colorful interior. Lovely chalkboard menus. You can bring the family and enjoy your ice cream treat right there. There are tables/chairs on the deck and some picnic tables on the grass out in front. During my visit on Saturday, Nina made me a wonderful chai vanilla ice cream float. I was looking forward to having a chai latte at the Red Devon but did not get there. I mentioned my love of chai to Nina so she made me the next best thing…perhaps even better. On Sunday I had an ice cream sundae consisting of vanilla ice cream, caramel, and crumbled chocolate chip cookies. She has some specialty sundaes on the menu or you can create your own with her wonderful assortment of toppings and sauces. She also gave me a sample of a new green tea ice cream which was very tasty.
This weekend she will be getting local bread from Wild Hive. Local orchards will be providing in-season fruit for sundae toppings and baked goods.
