From Winds in the Wilderness:
We hope you can join us on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 3:00 PM for another wonderful chamber music concert at Church of St. John in the Wilderness, Route 344, Copake Falls, NY. The Oblong Wind Quintet will play an hour of music by Bach, Milhaud, D’Rivera, Haydn, Barthe and Joplin. Suggested donation is $10.
Winds in the Wilderness Concerts is a chamber music series that was launched this past year and has met with tremendous success. Eclectic programming, a magnificent setting and a very enthusiastic community all contribute to the fact that we played to a full house for the three concerts of our first season.
We have some unique assets.
The Place: The little church on the hill is a landmark church. Designed by the renowned 19th century architect Richard Upjohn, it is one of the most acoustically hospitable places you will ever experience! Whether it is solo flute, oboe, cello, duet, trio or wind quintet, the sound is warm and embracing.
Asset number two: The Founders. In this little hamlet of Copake Falls and Copake live innovative people who are passionate about developing our natural and artistic resources. These community leaders formed the Advisory Board of Winds in the Wilderness following a concert on Copake Falls Day last August.
Asset number three: The Musicians. It is certainly no surprise that many excellent professional musicians live in this rural area, the Berkshires. Still, it was a real coup to be able to harness the enthusiasm of such wonderful musicians as Ellen Katz Willner, oboe and Beth Craig, cello to join me, Sharon Powers, flute in forming the Winds in the Wilderness Trio. We are similarly lucky to have the Oblong Wind Quintet perform in our series.
Our future: We are committed to diversity of musical styles, composers and instrumental combinations and to inviting new players and new pieces into our repertoire.
It didn’t start out that way. If we had articulated a ‘mission’ it would have been for beautiful players to play beautiful music in a beautiful place at 2:00 PM on Sundays in winter.
But ‘beautiful’ for a musician means showing all your colors and that means playing in many different styles. From Hoover’s meditative ‘Reflections’ to Haydn’s upbeat London trios, to playful Schickele dances, Piazzola, Copland, Bach and contemporary Wallach (a new piece written for us), audience feedback has shown that listeners adore the mix.
We are hoping to present four concerts this year starting in November. We would like to include new players- violin, viola, harp – and new pieces but first we need to raise money for musicians’ fees and administrative expenses. At present our only source of income is from donations at the door.
These days, when we can rely less and less on big organizations, national and international, to provide cultural nourishment we turn more and more to our village and county. It is often there that we find true gems.
Contributions small and big will be deeply appreciated and acknowledged in our program brochure as follows:
Winds: $50 +
Wilderness: $250+
Falls: $500+
Bash Bish: Other Amounts
