Both Hammertown Pine Plains and Hammertown Rhinebeck will present a selection of work by Maine Photographer Lynn Karlin: The Pedestal Series from November 13 – January 2011. We are especially excited and proud that Jeff Daly (www.jeffdalydesign.com) former Chief of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, agreed to oversee the hanging of this gorgeous exhibit in both Rhinebeck and the Barn.

Lynn’s luscious photographs capture the flavor and form of the harvest — featuring heirloom vegetables, furled fiddlehead ferns, luscious tomatoes, vegetables and flowers fresh from the garden. I saw the photos and met Lynn on a recent visit to Maine, and was struck by their beauty and integrity. Weekly visits to local farmers’ markets and the popular restaurant Chase’s Daily, in Belfast, Maine, a farm to table restaurant, led Karlin on a quest to honor vegetables by literally placing them on pedestals. Her eclectic mix of old pedestals has grown to more than a dozen.
Originally from New York, Karlin was the first woman staff photographer for WWD and W. She was also a freelance photographer for The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, House Beautiful and Country Living before moving to Maine in 1983. She and Stanley Joseph co-produced their first book, Maine Farm, A Year of Country Life which documented a year living on their farm, previously owned by the famed back-to-the-landers Helen and Scott Nearing. Lynn went on to photograph the best-selling Gardens Maine Style books, written by the former features editor of Country Living Gardener, Rebecca Sawyer-Fay, who also moved to Maine.
Please join us in Pine Plains November 13th from 2:30-4 and then at our Hammertown Rhinebeck Gallery from 5-6:30 to meet the photographer, savor these photographs, sample local cheeses and sip a glass of wine.
