Our Newest “Hammertown Home”

In the interest of unbiased reporting, I feel the need to admit that the story you are about to read is completely biased. I have always wanted to live in a restored barn. So, when Joan suggested customer Ann Harding’s full-time residence in Millbrook as the next, Hammertown Homes feature, I jumped at the chance to tag along as scribe and photographer.

One Million Ways To Help

One million. What comes to mind with those two words? Dollars, viewers, iPhones?
What about a remarkable documentary that tells the story of one young man–along with eleven of his best friends– and his trek from Georgia to California in search of a dream?

Join the “Coalition to Unchain Dogs”

I had a sneaking feeling that Joan would respond as strongly as I did when I saw one of the latest videos from the Durham, North Carolina group, The Coalition to Unchain Dogs. Every Sunday a group of volunteers heads to another home to build a fence for a dog or dogs that have been chained or tied outside.

Rhinebeck’s Arts-Walk-About

There is always something happening in Rhinebeck. Unlike other communities near the Hammertown stores which tend to hibernate in the unpredictable winter weather, Rhinebeck is always a flurry of activity. From Upstate Films special screening events to the Annual “Love Our Locals” promotion, Rhinebeck offers something for everyone. And as part of Rhinebeck’s Arts-Walk-About, Hammertown [...]

When you wish upon a star…

Actually, I wasn’t thinking of just anyone wishing upon a star, I was thinking specifically of Mara Chase, one of Hammertown Rhinebeck’s sales associates. As Mara gets ready to move to a new apartment in the City–having recently graduated from college–she has started to wish for smaller pieces of furniture for her fancy digs… One [...]

Joint Venture

One of Hammertown’s core values is community. Joan believes firmly in giving back to local communities where each of her stores –and the homes of her employees and family- are located. As a result, Hammertown is involved with organizations that work to strengthen local communities as well as partner with like-minded businesses and individuals. Hammertown’s [...]

How to be a Good Dog

Lesson #1: Know Your Place. Abby, Joan’s golden retriever, is a mainstay at the Barn as anyone who has ever been to the Bar knows. She lays by the door on a daily basis and paws her way into even the most single-minded shopper’s heart. Needless to say kids love her. Many will sit on [...]

Rhonda’s Magic Touch

Pictured above is a Gloria Chair upholstered in Maya Cloud. In front of the Gloria is the Brickmaker’s Coffee Table. And, no, it doesn’t come smaller. You know how some people can you just lift their little finger and miracles happen? Well, Rhonda works her decorating magic in a similar way. She had emailed me [...]

Guinea hens and quail and….turkey? Oh My!

One of comments that Hammertown associates hear on a regular basis is how unusual the store is and how beautifully merchandise is displayed. This is not one of my talents, however but it needn’t be thanks to the keen eye of associates like Jessica Churton and our General Manager Rhonda Cayea. On Fridays, I usually [...]
