A casual meeting at the store one afternoon with Caroline Phipps has led me on a new journey.
Caroline, a health counselor, had stopped by the leave some of her brochures. We started to talk, and I clearly became very interested in what she was saying. When I went home that evening and read the brochure, it got me thinking –
“Respect yourself and be the best you can be. Talk to me about your health and happiness” …interesting…
“Learn how to round out your life and get some balance…”
Oh boy, I thought, this sounds like just what I need. I am a busy person and as I continued to read there were so many trigger points for me….yes this could help. Without getting too personal, I seem to invest too often in everything else but myself. I don’t have enough time for “me”, or more importantly, I don’t take the time for “me”. I decided very quickly this is something that could be good for me, and Caroline seems like the kind of person that could help me get on the road…the road to better health, better diet, and a better me! And, as important, she could help keep me on this road, by developing patterns that become part of my life. So, I dialed her number and we met for our complimentary meeting.
Could one conversation change your life?? Certainly a conversation with Caroline changed mine! One consultation later, I was on the journey to finding out more about me, the food I eat, and the road to a healthier lifestyle. Staying on the road is the difficult part of the journey, but Caroline is helping me prepare! As she said, “Failure to prepare is to prepare for failure”.
This is a process and I am beginning to learn a lot…about me, about food, exercise, diet, my relationship with it, and about the importance of balance in one’s life. Caroline’s extensive training in Integrative Nutrition has taught her that no one diet works for everyone and now together we will discover the food and lifestyle choices that will best support ME. Caroline is so fascinating — I sit with pen and paper writing so much down I want to remember after each visit.
I will keep you posted with my progress every few weeks…with recipes, ideas, and challenges that I have met and conquered.
So far, I have tried to put the following into daily practice and have been fairly consistent:
1. Begin each day with a glass of water before you eat anything else!
2. Don’t skip breakfast…it is the platform to help you have a better day. No more bagels and cream cheese….some protein like an egg or yogurt with some fresh fruit
3. Keep a journal, where I write down the three meals I eat, plus any snacks. Each week we review it together.
4. Try to exercise at least 3 times each week, with either a walk or a bike ride…and tennis season is here
5. Do not drink diet soda anymore
6. Water, water and more water…still trying to get enough water in each day
7. 4:00 snack…almonds…helps with the mid-day hunger
” My work as a holistic health counselor is akin to being a great detective. It’s my task to investigate every aspect of my clients’ lives because everything we do is interconnected and every decision we make either improves or detracts from our well being. A perfect example would be the discovery that a craving for ice cream late at night is in actuality a cry for more meaningful connection with a loved one. The creation of balance and flow is the key to leading a healthier happier life and this has never been more important than it is in these challenging times. After all, investing in ourselves is the most important thing we can do.” Caroline Phipps
