SHANDELL’S FEATURED IN HUDSON VALLEY MAGAZINE’s “Home Issue”! (CLICK HERE)
We first blogged about Shandell’s last summer. Author/entrepreneur Diane Meier had told me about what wonderful work Shandell’s owner and artisan, Susan Schneider, had done for her when she was looking for new lamps and shades.
When I finally saw some pictures of her work, I was so surprised to see what can be made into a base or a shade and I was doubly impressed by how fabulous it can look!
Here’s a wonderful example. Recently, on a visit to Susan’s studio, Diane and her husband, Frank, saw a couple of cream separators among the many interesting old objects Susan collects. They asked if Susan might be able to create lamps for their newly renovated barn out of them. Of course she was able to do it — brilliantly — as this is what Susan loves doing most.
“I am a longtime collector of things vintage with a passion for recycling them into things that make you smile. I feel that lighting is so important, that plain or fancy, a great lamp and shade can totally make a room…and it can even make you smile!” – Susan Schneider
I couldn’t agree more. Finding the right lighting for any room can be a real design challenge but Shandell’s can offer clever and beautiful solutions. Truly, by the time Susan has finished her magic, you will not only have a new lamp and or lampshade…you will have an inspired one-of-a-kind gorgeous work of art.
For 15 years, Susan has been making lamps from all sorts of found objects — “from table legs to iron machinery parts to portions of fences”. Her shade materials vary from vintage wallpapers to “amazing papers from around the world, including intricate, colorful marble patterns from France, Italy and India, among other resources.” Her work has been featured on Etsy.com as well as House Beautiful.

You can always tell when someone feels passionate and inspired about their work. When I asked Susan to send me some images of what inspires her–what makes her smile–she sent me these photos.
And, wouldn’t you know it…they made me smile too!
