Andy Szymanowicz started his first garden with the help of his grandfather when he was 5 years old — and he was hooked. At 15 he was already working in greenhouses and by 20, he was a forestry education major. Is it any wonder then to learn that his love for nature, growing plants and dedication to organic agriculture became the driving forces behind his business - Sol Flower Farm.
We introduced our readers to Sol Flower Farm in 2009. Since then Sol Flower has attracted a dedicated following of customers. From local residents to famous celebrities you can find Andy’s fans harvesting their own produce in his “pick your own” fields or picking up their weekly CSA shares at the Herondale Farm Store in Ancramdale.

Andy’s relationship with Herondale Farm has been an important and often symbiotic one. Both Andy and Herondale owner, Jerry Peele, are committed to organic, sustainable farming practices. Many of Sol Flower’s fields are located within Herondale Farm and the Biodynamic compost made on the farm from Herondale’s animals is used to amend the soil each year.
I am dedicated to sustainable agriculture. It is our mission to grow safe, healthy, nutritious food and flowers for our community. The health of our soils, plants and water are equally important in building our systems and producing nutrient dense crops. It takes a team of strong, motivated and passionate people to grow our food and flowers. At Sol Flower we are tending to our crops and community in cooperation with nature. — Andy Szymanowicz
It’s really an impressive and thoughtful operation that I’m proud exists right here in Ancramdale.
Andy is also planning some great events to celebrate the beginning of the season including a Plant Sale and Opening Barbecue the weekend before Memorial Day. We’ll let you know all the details soon. I know I’m going to be there.
